Using Update Manager in Maverick 10.10 64-bit I get the following:

"Failed to download repository information "
"Check your Internet Connection."
"Details"
W:GPG error: http://packages.medibuntu.org maverick Release: The following
signatures couldn't be verified because the public key is not available:
NO_PUBKEY 2EBC26B60C5A2783, W:Failed to fetch
www.backports.org/.../Packages.gz 404
Not Found

, W:Failed to fetch
people.debian.org/.../Sources.gz 404 Not
Found

, W:Failed to fetch
people.debian.org/.../Packages.gz 404
Not Found

, E:Some index files failed to download, they have been ignored, or old ones
used instead.

Now what have I done?

Disable the Medibuntu source in Package Manager and also the two that
refer to 'woody' as these are now too old and the repositories are not
on-line any more :-)

BTW - from the 'woody' references I assume that you've upgraded
several times so a word of warning about going from 10.10 to 11.04 -
upgrades are risky at the best of times but the major changes that
11.04 has introduced make it even riskier, especially on a system
that's already been upgraded from earlier versions. Chances are that
upgrading to 11.04 is going to go badly for you so be prepared for it
all to go horribly pear shaped !!

I would always go for a clean install in those circumstances.

Did you upgrade to 10.10? From the Medibuntu documentation on the
following page:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/Medibuntu

--quote--
sudo wget --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list
http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/$(lsb_release -cs).list &&
sudo apt-get --quiet update && sudo apt-get --yes --quiet
--allow-unauthenticated install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get
--quiet update

Medibuntu's repository is deactivated by upgrading to a newer Ubuntu
release, so you should run this [the above] command again after the
release upgrade.

You may also wish to add the following packages. The first will cause
many apps from the Medibuntu repository to appear in Ubuntu Software
Center (Ubuntu 9.10+) or Add/Remove Applications (versions prior to
9.10). The second will allow users to generate crash reports against
Medibuntu packages and submit them to the Medibuntu bugtracker.

sudo apt-get --yes install app-install-data-medibuntu apport-hooks-medibuntu

--endQuote--

Even if you didn't upgrade, the command listed above should get the
repository installed for you. Probably best to copy and paste it from
the link I provided directly into a terminal.

When I get these kind of messages it is because the internet connection
has failed. Using a laptop I find most often the WiFi switch is in the
off position. unless you have sent this message on another machine, I
would be looking for the switch. or just verify I have told the
connection manager to connect before I clicked the update manager Icon.
Other problems may be the repository server went down when you were
trying to update. If that were the case you could likely try again and
have it do it's job. I am sure in your case because of the release, the
last option would not fit (Release no longer supported).

Because I am a control freak. I don't tell the connection manager to
connect automatically. If I only used my machine at home I may turn that
option on but I don't like my machine connecting to open networks
without me knowing.

I'm at home, retired, and when the computer boots up online connection is
automatic. Plus, I was doing an update, most of the stuff could be found and the
updates made. Two failed, one was in reference to Google Chrome, the other in
reference to Adobe Flash. I, and I think you would agree, its strange that
either are down especially strange both being down at the same time. Its most
likely I messed something up.

Removing Chrome and Flash and failure to find those updates went away. Today I'm
still getting that message. Probably will reinstall 10.10 this weekend or one of
the next rainy days. We have been having more than our share of those.

I have Chrome and thought it did not need regular updates like most
other programs and it has an update security setting that may stop
Update Manager function.

The way to get Chrome to update is to either use Chromium in the
repositories or to add the Google source to your sources list.

To make sure that you're protected by the latest security updates,
Google Chrome automatically updates whenever it detects that a new
version of the browser is available. The update process happens in the
background and doesn't require any action on your part.

Check for updates

Updates are available if the wrench icon on the browser toolbar shows a
little arrow . To apply the update, just follow the steps below.

Click the wrench icon on the browser toolbar.
Select Update Google Chrome.
In the confirmation dialog that appears, click Restart. The browser
saves your opened tabs and windows and reopens them automatically when
it restarts. If you'd prefer not to restart right away, click Not now.
The next time you restart your browser, the update will automatically be
applied.

As I said it does not need you to use Update Manager.

I have Chrome and also Chromium and since installing they've not been
used much - not a fan of Chrome. However, since the Chrome PPA is in
my updates sources I get regular updates through the usual Ubuntu
Update Manager. Perhaps if the PPA isn't there the browser would show
an update is there to apply but if the user chooses not to apply, or
doesn't notice / understand the change in the wrench icon, then it
doesn't update. Having the PPA means that updates install without any
user interaction other than getting the usual Ubuntu updates.

I have Chrome on 10.04 and on Win 7 and use it on occasion, both update
automatically in the background. Although I use update Manager on Ubuntu
I do no bother with Chrome of Flash that way.
