Very fast window managers

Date: Dec 13    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 430

I installed and tried Openbox and Fluxbox under Linux Mint. However, it seems
that before login, there is a session option Gnome/Openbox which seems to have
been there, I cannot remember for sure. Uses the Gnome desktop environment and
Openbox as window manager. I was impressed by its speed. I like this
combination. However, it is also good to login into Openbox and launch Nautilus
or whatever from the command line. It is also good to login into Fluxbox, go to
Applications, Shells, Bash and launch Nautilus or whatever from the command
line. It is damn fast. I thought Ubuntu and its derivatives were slower, but it
seems that only the default window manager used in Gnome is slow.

You might want to consider Crunchbang Linux (http://crunchbanglinux.org/). It is
an Ubuntu derivative that has low overhead and uses Openbox with GTK support. It
is getting good reviews. There are three versions: regular, lite (fewer apps)
and Cruncheee. It uses some well known programmes and replaces a few with lesser
known ones to improve performance. You can see a list on their site. Crunchbang
is another name for the #! prompt, also called a shebang used in scripting. Fun!
