XP Overwrites Boot Sector

Date: Dec 14    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 357

I have installed Ubuntu 8.10 as a dual boot with XP on my Acer Aspire
laptop. Everything works fine until I boot XP then close down.
Recovery is easy enough using the install CD (although it did take me
a day to find it). The question is can I either modify this windows
behavior, or do something with GRUB to make it shorter?

When the machine is acting up I see a brief mention of GRUB on the
screen followed by a black screen, followed by a shutdown and reboot.
This continues endlessly until I either insert the Ubuntu CD or pull
the battery.

XP automatically restarts on fatal errors. You are probably experiencing
this.

Did you install Ubuntu after XP? Thats the way it should be done. and
the grub comes up and you choose which boot you want from the menu? If
you installed XP after Ubuntu, this may be the cause of the problem.

I don't have any help to offer, but I was curious which Aspire you
have.

I have an old Aspire 5000 that I bought refurbished on line but I
can't recall where.
