Wireless problems

I have an Acer AspireOne netbook with the Windows XP Home that came installed on
it and Ubuntu 9.10. I have a DSL Internet connection going to a SMC 4 port
wireless router.

Saturday I had both the Ethernet and wireless connections working. I could see
numerous other secure wireless networks around my location.

Yesterday I could not get a wireless connection in Ubuntu and it did not show
any access points. Checking the network connections it said wireless "device not
managed" and no wireless access points were shown. The wired network worked
fine.

Going into Windows I could see the numerous other wireless access
points,connected to and used mine.

Going back to Ubuntu into "Network Tools" I could ping the my wireless router
but Ubuntu still said "device not managed" and showed no wireless access points.

Today I booted into Ubuntu and the wireless connection was made without me even
asking. Now the wired connection says "device not managed".

What the heck is going on?

How I correct the wayward installation of Ubuntu 9.10?

Please, tell me what I don't know about this problem.
