Date: Dec 11    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 415

Have just up-graded from 8.10 to 9.04 and now when I connect to wireless
internet both Firefox & Thunderbird cannot find the server,
Ubuntu tells me I am connected to the wireless broadband network OK.
Am fairly new to Ubuntu.

You may be connected to the broadband but not to your ISP. Or you may
find that you Firewall needs its settings adjusted for FF and Thund

Iam connected to my ISP, it is just Firefox & Thunderbird cannot find the
server.
I had no problems in 8.10 install of Ubuntu

How do I check or change the fire wall settings ?
Thanks for answering.

This was a straight forward up grade to 9.04
from the internet under 8.10, no problems encounted while\upgrading.

There is a script around that will reset the iptables settings to the
origianal unrestricted state. Do a search on "rescue script ubuntu" and you
should find it. If not let me know and I'll dig it up and post it.

Depends which if any firewall you use.

This from the Ubu help file.

You can optionally install a firewall to protect your computer against
unauthorised access by people on the Internet or your network. Firewalls
block connections to your computer from unknown sources, which helps to
prevent security breaches.

1.
Install the firestarter package from the “Universe” repository.

2.
To start Firestarter, choose System ? Administration ? Firestarter, and
enter your administrator password when prompted.

3.
The Firewall Wizard should run. If it does not, press Firewall ? Run Wizard.

4.
Follow the steps in the Firewall Wizard. After completing all of the
steps, the firewall should be configured and running.

5.
To check that your firewall is working correctly, make use of an online
firewall testing service such as ShieldsUP.

For help and advice on the advanced configuration of Firestarter, see
the Firestarter Online Manual.

More advanced users may wish to use the UFW firewall, which is installed
by default. See the UFW manual for more information.
