Trouble with the Internet connection.

I am new to Ubuntu and I have trouble with my pppoe connection. I configured
the connection but it just does not connect. to the network. Do I have to use
another type of Ethernet card ? My former bosses also have Ubuntu and they use
an ethernet card for Windows and another one for Ubuntu. I have no more Windows
on my PC, while installing Ubuntu I wiped it out. How could I repartition my
Hard - disk so as to install Windows XP on the same hard-disk ?
If I mount a serial ATA hard-disk, can I install Windows on that one ?
I need Windows mostly because I make programs in Visual Basic 6.0.

What make and model ethernet card do you have? Can
you tell us what you mean by configured your card? If you double click
on the network icon on the top right hand side of your screen, click on
Wired Connection, do you have DHCP Automatic Configuration selected? You
wouldnt if you are assinged an IP.
