Problem with interrupted installation

Date: Dec 17    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 285

I had used Wicd 1.4.2-1-all very successfully and happily for many
months - until the update manager informed me of an update to 1.5.3.
When I installed it I was asked if I wanted to replace something and
given about 5 options. Trying to be cautious, I chose the one that was
supposed to show me the differences. It didn't work and I was left
with some kind of mixture of Gnome Network Manger and Wicd.

I can't get back the Wicd icon in the try, can't re-install Wicd of
either version, nor can I remove either one. My WiFi does work, but
loses it's WPA password on every reboot. I can put the P/W in using
the Gnome applet, and it works OK, but I do miss the ease of use of
Wicd, and would sure like to have the password saved again.

Is there any way to force a re-install or removal of Wicd? I get
cryptic error messages from Synaptic like:

invoke-rc.d: initscript wicd, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: warning - old pre-removal script returned error exit status 1
dpkg - trying script from the new package instead ...
Stopping wicd daemon...
invoke-rc.d: initscript wicd, action "stop" failed.
dpkg: error processing /var/cache/apt/archives/wicd_1.5.3_all.deb
(--install): subprocess new pre-removal script returned error exit
status 1

In short, I'm stuck with a package I can neither re-install, remove or
upgrade! If it were Windows (sorry!) I'd search the registry for any
references to wicd and delete them and delete the directory under
Program Files, which usually would allow a fresh install.

Anyone out there who can help me, please? I love my Ubuntu box, but
this one has to be my biggest learning experience to date.

I would suggest that you tell synaptic to force version 1.4.3 and see if that
does it. If that doesn't work I would try to install from source then remove
using the same source script. Also make sure to do a complete removal of the
gnome network manager.

Also you could try googleing the error message about the old uninstall script.
If you can find the uninstall script you may be able to follow it for a manual
uninstall as well.

I'll try everything you suggest and let you know the result.

Thanks for your encouragement. I got Wicd to work, finally, but no tray
icon. Maybe a reboot will fix that.
After doing a web search I decided that what I had to do was remove all wicd
entries in rc2.d and init.d folders - with my heart in my mouth because I
didn't really know what I was doing. That allowed me to use apt-get remove
wicd, which told me to apt-get autoremove and that did remove wicd finally.
I tried to install the old and new versions, which I had downloaded and had
on the desktop, but gdebi told me in both cases to use the version in the
repositories. That installed wicd_1.5.3 successfully.

Everything works now except there is no tray icon. I know I had it before.
I've searched the menus and can't find any referrence to showing it. Any
ideas?

there is a Wicd tray icon, but it's different
from the earlier version. I also found my Firestarter firewall was blocking
my connection, but have that fixed.

I am glad that you have it fixed. Wicd is by far the absolute best in absolutely
every way for wireless connect. No idea why Ubuntu does not use it by default.
