Optimization code

Is there a simple way to maximize or minimize an equation (that is
given in a cell)?

I've written linear optimiation (price-ratio-pivot) stuff and non-
linear optimization code in FORTRAN, but this looks like there should
be a simpler way than re-writing it.

For optimization  in Excel, you can use the "Solver Add-In". You need
to enable it by going Tools, Add-Ins... and checking the box for
Solver. (It also may need to be installed from the Excel CD.) Once it
is there, go to Tools, Solver, and fill in the form. It is pretty nice.
