I have just installed Ubuntu on an old machine
a few days ago and have zero knowledge of it...I will say that it is a
beautiful looking OS...I assume that programs don't install like MS
programs and they need an installer of some type...Where do I go for
that info?...

Since you are very new to Linux, go into Add/Remove Applications in your
system menu to install new applications. Once you feel a little more
comfortable with Ubuntu, you can go into the Synaptic Package Manager to
install just about anything for Ubuntu that you can imagine. It really
is far easier than it sounds.
