gettin to step 1 in KDE

Date: Feb 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 363

I can't get started in KDE. I have tried googling beginners help KDE';
everything starts on step 11 .

I can't add widgets to the desktop. I can open the widgewt menu but dragging,
clicking, double-clicking has no effect. I didmanage to install an alarm clock
app; software center says it's available under applications/accessories. No
'accessories' category exists, search won't turn up 'alarm'

Other than shutting down and trying again tomorrow, how do I get to step 1?

Adding KDE from the Terminal with apt-get may just give you the core, you will
want to use Synaptic and search for KDE and see all the stuff that is missing,
or just the widgets, for example.

Don't forget right-click, that's what brings up Openbox's menus on Lubuntu, nice
to have a backup menu.

To add widgets to the desktop, Right-click on the desktop and choose Add
Widgets. A panel will appear at the bottom. Scroll though and choose one
and drag and drop it in place. To add then to the panel you right-click on
the panel. This will only work if you click on a spot on the panel that is
not already occupied. Widgets can be moved and removed once they are added
by clicking on the widget. To configure mouse over it and click on the
wrench. To resize mouse over and click on the resize icon. To remove
right-click and choose Remove widget. To move it mouse over and grab on the
popout bar.

KDE is very powerful and versatile, but you can mess it up if try to change
it too much without practice. If it does mess up you can start over by
just deleting the hidden folder .kde. It will rebuild itself from scratch
after you logout and back in.
