Everything was working fine so I decided to explore and installed the
KDE desktop out of curiousity. I think Ive found most everything
except there seem to be no screensavers installed. Applications -
System has a folder full of screensavers, but there seems to be no
way to access them. Can anyone help?

Had already done that, there were no screensavers in the folder-
which is why I said they seemed not to have been installed. In the
meantime - I did however find some in synaptic, so installed them
and they worked.

Please tell me how you successfully installed KDE on Ubuntu ! After I burnt
myself last month installing KDE on Linux Mint and failed to start it and
removed apparently useless KDE apps one by one and later regretted it because
most Gnome and KDE apps work in LXDE Desktop I installed KDE in a different way
under ubuntu Jaunty:

sudo aptitude install kubuntu-desktop

I thought it was as simple and safe as installing xfce by

sudo aptitude install xubuntu-desktop

or installing lxde by

sudo aptitude update
sudo aptitude install lxde

now it starts as Kubuntu and if choosing KDE as session it gives so many
errors I cannot remember them. KDE does not start. I will have to note the error
messages on paper.

I simply followed the instructions here
https://help.ubuntu.com/9.04/config-desktop/C/index.html
and miraculously they worked. I had tried to install it previously
and kept being told that my processor AMD64 was not supported- so I
was amazed when this one worked.

I re-did it. At startup the error message is:
"Kstartupconfig does not exist or fails. the error code is 3. Check"

Then when I click OK it says something like

"Your session lasted only for 10 seconds"

and some explanations.

I clicked to view the details and there was a long error report with a lot of
"permission denied"

You are likely missing some libraries. I would go to
Synaptic and look at the KDE sections and see if something is missing. BTW,
I am writing this from Jaunty with KDE 4.2, so I know that it works.
