I am a beginner with server technologies/programming etc. I have a
question: what is the difference between a webserver such as apache
httpd server, or tomcat etc., and the servers that you write in the
java programming language using the rmi classes such as ServerSocket
and Socket? someone please explain since i am confused with a very
fundamental thing.

What's do you want a matrix? As you soon know by now,
the terminology webserver  created for differentiate
between fileserver, printserver, emailserver,
faxserver, and farmserver...

Java server  is nothing more than a webserver that
utilize Java technologies. I prefer you paid a visit
to Sun website to for more detail info.
