Yes, well maybe. It depends on what is wrong with the internal
hard drive where the pictures are stored. The live CD you are running
on will show the disk if it is spinning and available.
Now also which ever live CD version Linux you are on bring up the
file manager, and you should be able to see several folders then a line
and the "Computer, BOOT, RECOVER" at least that is what I see then some
more items below another line. You can double click on BOOT which should
be your Windows OS section of the hard disk, then below that is the file
structure for the the "C" drive, then you need to drive down to the
folder of your pictures. Then you should be able to copy the pictures
from the hard drive to another drive, like USB backup drive.
If the hard drive of the laptop is not visible on the file manager then
a repair shop may be able to take the disk out of the holder and put it
in another holder to reclaim the pictures but it may be risky and to
expensive.

Thanks for the info, I did bring up the file manager but it didn't
see any files and no computer, boot ,recover folders I think it's
fried and I'll have to junk this old laptop as It's not worth the
money to get the pic's out of it...:( I think I'll re-install
another OS as I only use it when I'm camping with the Motor home..

Again, Thank you very much for the info and your reply..

Time and effort are different than money, and both things to consider.
If you have time and can spare 10-15 bucks on a "chance" to get your data
back, you can buy an external enclosure from newegg.com or somewhere
similar. You'll have to take the time to figure out which type and size
hard drive you have, but an external enclosure will sometimes allow a disk
to spin up and be read when laptop hardware no longer does. As an
example, I have a 4 GB hard drive that died from my very first laptop
(circa 1999). It would do anything in the computer, but is still working
fine today as a backup from an external enclosure. If nothing else and
you're ready to through the laptop out, pull the HD out, give it a solid
tap flat onto a table, put it back in, then try to power it up one last
time... Some times you can get lucky.

No problem glad to try to help, in future you might want to get a
USB thumb drive to back up the pictures. I have several, and also
a 1 TB USB external drive to backup those kinds of files on four PC's
comes in handy.

You can rescue almost anything using a dedicated distribution such as
SystemRescueCD. It is free. See:
http://www.sysresccd.org/SystemRescueCd_Homepage

Clonezilla is good for cloning your drive, assuming it is still good.
http://www.clonezilla.org/

These tools have the advantage over a regular Live CD in that they include
specialized tools for recovering data.

Your computer may not be sick, either. Sometimes they do not boot, but
everything is intact and the bootloader just needs to be reinstalled. Do
NOT re-install or you will lose everything (unless that is your intent).
