I use GMail with Evolution all the time when in Linux Mode.

Server Configuration: smtp.gmail.com, Server req. Authentication

Security : Set to TLS

Authentication: set to Plain

The only difference is that I use POP instead of IMAP for receiving,
but that should be inconsequential to this matter.
