How to start over in Ubuntu.

I've messed around with Ubuntu 8.10 and had don't a number of changes and I
think I have messed some things up. It still works but I think I need to do a
fresh install of Ubuntu. I want to back up my Home directory but not all the
system settings where I messed up my Virtual machine console. I had a virtual
machine with windows XP on my Acer Aspire 6930 Laptop. I have and Intel Duo
processor T6400 (2.0 Ghz, 800 FSB, 2MB L2 cache) 4 GB DDR2. I want to do a dual
boot system with Windows XP on one partition and Ubuntu 8.10 on the other
because I could never get the sound going on the Virtual Machine. Anyone can
help me do this the best way so it all goes smoothly?

Did you turn on sound in the virtual machine?
If your using Virtualbox then you have to enable sound in the settings
of each virtual machine.
