Ubuntu web browsers??

Date: Dec 17    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 589

I'm just getting started with Ubuntu & was wondering which web browsers
people like to use?

I'm currently trying out Mozilla. I was searching for Galeon, which I
believe was the Gnome browser, but it looks like its no longer
available.

Has anyone tried 'Kazehakase'? will it run on Ubuntu?

I havent heard of the others. Firefox is great. It has plenty of add-ons
and is, of course, open source. I was using win I still ran MS O/S's.

You can install that browser in Synaptic. I have not used it and it looks pretty
bar bone. I mainly use FF. I used Opera and went back to FF. Opera can be
installed in Synaptic as well.

Most of browsers for linux are mozilla based. The ones you mention are light
weight. Not much in the way of add ons.If you are into social browsing flock is
a good one to use. Its mozilla based also but you can use most of firefox
addons. Synaptic does not have it now but you can find it at get deb.

Most people use Firefox which is the default browser on 80% of distros. A few
use Konqueror (KDE). Gnome uses Epiphany as its browser, although Galeon is
still available. I also like Flock which is a social browser built on top of
Firefox, using Gecko. There are several forks in the Mozilla project, Seamonkey,
Iceweasel, Iceape, etc. Yes, Kazehakase works in Linux.

I have the following browsers installed in Ubuntu 8.04: elinks (text mode),
Dillo (small), Epiphany, Firefox 2 and 3, Flock, Galeon, Iceweasel, Kazehakase,
Konqueror 3 and 4, Links 2 (text), Skipstone, Seamonkey (Mozilla). and surfraw
(console). In Wine I have Safari, IE6, Chromium (Chrome from Codeweavers based
on google's open sourced code), Avant, Netscape, K-meleon, Maxthon2, and I would
install more oldies if I could find them just for nostalgia. There is also Lobo,
a java based browser that I have installed.

Plus I have a number of quasi-browsers installed such as GGZ Gaming Zone, Amaya,
WebHTTrack, and media based ones.

And the winner is... Firefox due to its configurability and features.

Firefox is the way to go for a browser in Ubuntu. After Firefox,
SeaMonkey is a good #2 browser that could easily be the #1 browser if
Firefox wasn't so good. Epiphany is a good browser, but it's bookmark
file system kind of sucks. It forces everything to be filed in
alphabetical order, if you want it that way or not. If Epiphany ever
fixes that, Epiphany would be a really good browser. Opera works OK in
Ubuntu, but like Epiphany, it forces your bookmarks into alphabetical
order, if you want them that way or not. Konqueror doesn't run G-mail
or Yahoo Mail properly. Galeon and Kazehakase seem to be abandoned
projects.

Personally I love Opera, tabs work exactly how they should (they always
seem like an after thought in Firefox and IE to me after using Opera) and
it`s got integrated mail to which appears as a tab in its own right.

I'll second that appreciation of Opera. It's also great to have easy and
automatic synchonization of bookmarks built in. I like that as I have more
than one computer and keeping everything in sync is a piece of cake.

I think Firefox has that too, but I found it first in Opera and it just
works.

After I moved to 8.04 I found Firefox incredibly unstable. I couldn't
even save bookmarks between sessions. I have used Opera many times over
the years but not solely until recently. I have almost no problems with
it. As a browser is perfectly fine. The few problems I have had I'm sure
is because of my upgrade to 8.04 but on my earlier setup, Feisty, it ran
perfectly.

The only thing that I give it a mark against is when I'm developing for
the web. The development tools suck.

I have 8.4 and Firefox is just the same and totally stable as it
was in all the former versions of Ubuntu I have used so I do not know
why you have problems with it.

I have been looking at the number of people who are having troubles and
those who are not with this new upgrade. I have a very general vanilla
computer so one would think it would run fine with 8.04 but, my older,
salvaged Dell laptop is more stable OS wise.

FF was unstable from the minute I turned it on. Since all the updates in
recent weeks it has become better though. But at this point in time Im
fully invested into Opera so, when I upgrade to the next release, Ill
see about moving back.

My install:

-- Ubuntu 8.04 hardy 64-bit
-- Firefox 3.0.3

Sometimes FF freezes for no apparent reason.

Sometimes it just stops showing Flash animations. I have to shut it down
and reopen to get things back working.

Standard font rendering is just awful! Opera, Konqueror and SeaMonkey do
a much better job rendering fonts.

There are other minor issues.

Answer #12    Answered On: Dec 17

You can change the fonts in the Firefox Preferences and you can improve rending
from the Ubuntu settings. Sometimes Firefox can be made unstable by adding
certain extensions. In my experience I have never had a problem with Firefox
that has not been tweaked or added to. Instability seems to develop over time,
as you change it.

It may also have something to do with other things that you have running as
well. I was having a problem on the eeePC with Compiz running and Forefox
freezing. I shut off Compiz and the problems with Firefox went away and
everything else seemed to work better as well.

I too use more than one computer and like having the same bookmarks on
each. I use Firefox and Foxmarks and haven't had a problem that I
couldn't work through. I can't remember why I gave up on Opera after
looking at it. Maybe I will have another look....

I was happily using foxmarks [one PC is on 7.10 and the other 8.04]
but foxmarks on 8.04 i found unreliable... sync got stuck quite often.
I've now reverted to google bookmarks which i don't like as much.
