Ubuntu on netbooks

Date: Dec 04    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 391

I'm considering buying a netbook. Is there a site where I can find and know that
a certain netbook will work with Ubuntu? I'm especially concerned about the
WIFI. I'm guessing everything else will pretty much work.

Dell mini 10v works great...............

I'm seeing a lot of Dell Mini's in response. Since I've about narrowed my search
down to the Dell Mini 10, I have another question. How is the video on imbeded
players from sites like Youtube and Hulu? The reason I ask is that video on
sites like this on my older equipment tends to skip a bit. Even a Dell PC with a
2.8 gig processor and a gig of ram. I suspect the onboard video isn't up to the
task and a decent video card would clear it up, but how are the Mini's on video?

I suspect that skipping on youtube and similar sites is more a function
of your internet speed than computer hardware. I have a fast dsl
connection and never notice skipping while my neighbor has a slower
connection and does experience it.

My netbook gets out of syn when I have too many things open (ie: mail, google
reader, open office) The atom chip core is small.

When I test my speed here: http://www.speedtest.net/ My results are 2.92Mb/s
upload and .49 Mb/s upload. Also, when playing video, The cashed file progress
bar runs way ahead of the viewing progress bar. Still, if I download a video it
plays perfectly, but if I watch it in an imbeded player in the browser the video
skips and the sound and picture are out of sync. I've installed all of the
Mozilla helpers I can find for Mplayer and VLC. I don't know what it could be if
not the onboard video card. The machine is a refurbished business machine and I
suspect it just wasn't built for doing much video processing.

I'm using HP mininotebook HP2133 n using Ubuntu Ultimate Edition 2.5
everything facility work no problem.

Your internet connection is certainly fast enough to not be the cause of
your problem. Perhaps you could google your video chipset and see if
others have similar problems. I know there is no inherent reason onboard
video should cause this, I use it on 80% of my computers and have never
h ad this problem. I also have a couple refurbished buisiness machines
which play embedded video just fine. (I find the old p4 1.7 gig
processors can be had for around $100 and do a great job, especially as
a ubuntu server). Have you tried using different browsers? I assume
you are not using a proxy.

in the small print you may find that your embedded player is also a P2P
server so you are receiving from multiple connections and also uploading to
others too.(( e.g. BBC iPlayer) I guess that is slowing your streaming.
If you can download the complete file and view later, it may all be OK.

Depending on the video card, it could also be a driver issue. I'm currently
setting up a mythbuntu box using the nvidia ION graphics card, and get poor
video (tearing of the video image). The answer is apparently a new restricted
driver, see here:

The newest version is 190.53, which I'll try at the weekend

I typically get skipping when viewing on-line video. As much as it
cashes data before it starts there is a time it stops to feed itself. I
know it is an Internet problem, because viewing DVDs on the computer has
no problem with hesitation. 1.9ghz clock.

i have lots of pcs which used to run win95
and they skip on youtube because the processor isnt fast enough,
especially in full screen mode,
the engines just cant take it Mr Kirk!

Answer #13    Answered On: Dec 04

Youtube and Hulu use Flash, and the flash player does not take advantage of
processing in the video card. The CPU does all the processing, and a
single-core Atom is marginal for high definition video.

As others have said, it's more likely that the data is slow arriving with your
current setup.

I bought asus eee and I run the karmic netbook remix. Everything works.

Answer #16    Answered On: Dec 04

I'm running Ubuntu Karmic 9.10 on a laptop and faced some difficulties with WiFi
unstability (frequent disconnections) but things have greatly improved since I
moved from the default "network manager" to "Wicd" another network manager
included in the distribution, I still have disconnections (maybe due to
interferences with other local WiFi networks working on the same channel) but it
reconnects automatically and never disconnects when downloading something.

Answer #17    Answered On: Dec 04

Using 9.10 on Toshiba laptop no WiFi problem. Using 9.10 remix on Acer
One notebook no WiFi problems. No other problems either, all things work
and even work with little effort with Virgin broadband2go USB device.
