Screen saver causing freeze

Date: Dec 06    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 590

First let me say that I am a fresh newbie to Linux and Ubuntu. I just installed
Ubuntu 8.04 about 3 hours ago. As I was browsing the screen savers previews I
clicked on "molecule" and my machine locked up. Now I am unable to make any
changes to the screen saver settings because "molecule" comes up every time I
open the settings control. How do I edit the screen saver program file to
either remove "molecule" from the list or reset the program to run a different
screen saver.

This may help sometimes:

Open your package manager (Synaptic?), search for packages including
"compiz" in their names and removes them all (support for 3d desktop
that's may cause difficulties, personally i am better off without them).

If it's doesn't do anything, you can still install them back.

Otherwise you may try to see the tiny documentation of gnome-screensaver
by typing man gnome-screensaver in a console, I wonder if the command:

gnome-screensaver --no-daemon

would stop the screensaver from showing up....
