I've done this for my local network but the procedure requires
knowledge of how to configure the *.db files as well as
knowledge of how to configure named.conf Also, there are encryption
considerations to worry about.

Those items and the structure of the distributed BIND database system
are complicated enough to warrent purchaseing a
book on the subject. I reccomend "DNS and BIND" by Paul Albitz &
Cricket Liu This is one of the O'RIELLY books with an animal of some
sort on the cover. Grasshoppers in this case. For example, one thing
that this book mentions that much of the documentation does not is that
named.conf can be arranged in "views" so that folks on you local network
can see one view and folks from outside can see another. I found this
handy for my home network gateway.

If you are short on cash you might try Morpheus. I've seen O'RIELLY
books there before. Ebay is always an option too.
Another less expensive road is to find a list that is specifically DNS
orientated.

Opennic.unrated.net has a howto for setup of a dns server with their
alternate tld's as well. It's really a good howto.
