Linux alternatives for M/S Publisher?

I am trying to get away from the Microsoft world. I have found Linux programs
for most of my needs except Publisher. Anyone have any tips? I use it to design
postcards, 8.5x11 flyers and newsletters (normally 8 letter size pages, printed
on two double sided 11x17 sheets).

I recommend you look into LaTeX.
Versions are available for Windows and Linux.
Takes some learning, but it's a permanent solution.
Used extensively by virtually every university.
