Language translation software

When you need to translate between languages like English,
German, French, Russian, etc., you have Babylon software in
the Windows world. And it works well. BUT, it costs ten
dollars a month - too much for the occasional needs of a
person like me.

Question: Does the Linux world have a GNU-style equivalent,
or near-equivalent, to Babylon? Or something similar?
For me at least, Google has not provided a clear answer.

Is there anyone with experience in this area?
Is there an Ubuntu package I should try?

Lernout & Hauspie's "Power Translator Pro" (English, Spanish, French,
German, Italian) works with WINE, and that includes printing. It doesn't work in
a Windows 7 native installation, by the way.

Google is the answer! From the Google search page, click the "more" tab and
select "even more." At the bottom-right is "translate." I use it for English
to Chinese and vice-versa.

I open two tabs, type something in English, copy/paste the translated result
onto the Chinese to English page, and if it still seems to have my original
meaning, send the Chinese to my sweetie.

Language Translator software works well enough as a translator, but it does not have many benefits over the online translators available.
