click on programs but they don't start

I'm running 7.10. When I click on Open Office, I get the splash screen which
disappears and then nothing happens. CPU use is 0%, so obviously the system is
at rest.. Opera exhibits the same behavior sometimes.

open up the terminal under applications>assessories>terminal and type in all in
one word.

openoffice

If the program fails to run it will tell you and give an error code or tell you
what the error is.

You make want to check if the IDE cable is not shorted out. I had one shorted
out on me after I installed a second hard drive. After I replaced the IDE cable
it ran fine. All so it may be the CPU or bad ram. If it is the HD that is
failing. You can save you data to the new HD or back up every thing. Do not toss
out the bad HD in the trash before wiping it out.

Some one can go. Oh what can be on this at the city dump. Most places recycle
before it goes to the land fill and it can be bad news.

I usually take them apart and bend up the individual disks with a pair of pliers
before I dump them. I also smash them with an 8-lb sledge a couple of times for
good measure.

I'll second that - I've used it on a number of Windows systems and it's
amazing! Well worth the price.

Usual disclaimer - no connection to the company, just a very, very
satisfied user.
