Can I upgrade ubuntu directly from an ISO file?

I was unable to burn the disk. I think that the file is too big for a CD but
I tried it anyway.
It failed so I tried a blank DVD, that failed too. The error code was 255.
It slso said that sometime using the TAO mode will work. I have no idea what
that is.
