Ubuntu upgrade

Date: Dec 27    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 329

my Ubuntu told me I could upgrade today, so I did. I now
have 8.04 and it works the same. I had hoped the atheros wireless card
would work, but it doesn't. I still have to stick a USB wireless
device in the side of my Aspire 3680 to get on the net wirelessly. I
also hoped the sound card would drive the speakers, but no such luck.
I still have to plug in earbuds for sound. These are small
inconveniences. The lack of a simple way to download my favorite
podcasts for my MP3 player is the major problem I have with Ubuntu.

I have Vista on a desktop, and compared start up times. They're
identical. I use Vista for my MP3 podcasts, and for watching Netflix
movies on the Web since Netflix doesn't work with Ubuntu, either...

I don't like dual booting or I'd just do that instead of having two
computers. I just wish the rest of the world would provide the drivers
needed for things like podcasters and Netflix movies.

I downloaded the 8.04 Live-CDs last week to try them on a PC that
normally runs MEPIS, with an Atheros chipset Netgear WG311T wireless
card. Xubuntu fired right up into the wireless. The Ubuntu stumbled,
but I didn't take the time to see why Ubuntu didn't connect as easily
as Xubuntu.

Might want to get the xubuntu Live-CD and see if your Atheros hooks up.

Did you try the KDE app Amarok for podcasts? Know what you mean about
not liking to have to dual boot into Windows. Don't be afraid to try
WINE on some of those Windows apps you can't do without. I keep coming
back to uTorrent with WINE as the best bittorrent choice for Linux. It
doesn't sound logical to use a non-Linux program, but it works with
little bloat.

I'll just use the USB for wireless. It's not a problem.

Amarok is very difficult to figure out, I think. I got it and tried
it but it doesn't work anything like "Juice" did on Windows.

When I run windows software, or even Windows, under Wine, I get no
internet connection.
