If you are playing the file in VLC click on the <tools> drop-down menu.
Click on <Adjustments and effects> Make sure you do not have the
spatializer check box selected. For audio I like to use the graphics
equalizer as I have dead spots in my hearing frequencies.

I have noticed that the spatializer will make an echo so check that out.
