There is a lag in the development of open source drivers for most things, mostly
due to the way OEMs operate. Despite a offer from open source developers to
write drivers for hardware for free, not all OEMs are there yet, either through
lack of trust or foresight, as they continue to ignore the Linux market for
their products.
You may have to wait for a few months in order for what you want to become
available, depending on how recent the model is. It would not hurt to approach
Viewsonic. Maybe you will get a driver and maybe not, but at least you have
registered in their mind the need for a Linux driver.
Another thing to try is to try a generic or an older driver from Viewsonic. This
will likely not give the results you expect, but it will allow you to work in
Linux. You might also look into trying a newer distro such as Intrepid or Fedora
10, both in developement stages, but at least you can test it out Live to see if
a newer kernel and drivers help. That will give you a glimpse into what is
coming down the pipe in the near future. Patience may be required in the short
term.
It could be worse. When I first got my HP computer a few years ago no distro
would install for the first couple of months and then I got MEPIS to install. It
took months before the next one would install. Now just about anything will
install on it. The reason appeared to be lack of SATA support when IDE was the
way to go. (Although there is still something funky about the BIOS that gives
some distros reason to balk.)
