Is this a new install on the laptop or has it been working OK all
along? Have you done some up dates or installed some software that
could of affected it?

So when you first turn it on it gets the address from the router OK.
Are you using DHCP or a dedicated address? I presume you mean the
browser quits working.

Does Email still work OK to your pop server after the trouble starts?

Are the lights on the router showing correctly for a working circuit
to the laptop the same as the desktop before and after the trouble
starts? Are there any differences after the trouble starts.

Do the router leds flash on the router port to the laptop after the
trouble starts? In ten to twenty minutes when Gaim quits?

Does restarting the browser do anything for you?

Can you ping the router?

Can you ping any other machine on your network?

Can you ping your own loopback?

Can you ping anything?

Can your desktop ping the laptop or access the laptop?

I would say- check the settings in
the network control panel.
Is it using WEP ?
If so, you may want to make sure
there are dashes in the WEP key.

The WEP stuff would not lend itself to
intermittent connection dropouts though,
if you had the key wrong, you just
would not connect at all to the router.

If I had to guess, it sounds like you
possibly have some interference somewhere...

yeah, its been working great for a long time. it's done this
before, but then snapped out of it. dunno what causes it. but yeah, i just recently updated software. i installed a chess game last week.

well, the browser pops up, but it doesnt connect to any sites. email
doesnt work. just tried it. GAIM is still connected and vlcplayer still
plays streaming audio.

Sounds like a time out is set up somewhere. Try checking all setting
options including Firefox or whatever browser you use and whatever email
client you use.

I, too, am having similar trouble. I have a desktop with a Belkin
wireless router. After about 10 minutes online, whether email or
surfing, I loose my connection. Once this happens my laptop
(wireless) and my other desktop (wired) continue to work OK in
Windows. I have to reboot my PC and I'm good for another 10 minutes.
I did not have the problem before a clean install of Ubuntu 7.1, 64
bit. I like Ubuntu too well to quit, but I don't know enough about
where to look for a flow chart of diagnostics to find and identify
the problem.

Im not an old hand but i dint think it is your router at least
not alone. I have A belkie and I dont have a problem and havent since
i got it the problem sounds like it could be linked to your IP
address like may be the router or cards are sit one to static and the
other flotes you should have one for the computer an internal for the
router and a net side for the router if any of these are being lost
track of i think it could case this.

The Belkin router works for the other two PC's. As I said I
don't know how to look in the network areas (as I do in Windows) and
most of what I do is guess work. I think you may be correct that it
has something to do with the IP address. Something causes it to loose
it and when it needs to connect to the net, it can't.

I'll keep trying and 'pinging' and see if I can get to the bottom of
this problem. I'm having fun with Ubuntu and I'll eventually find my
way.

mine's not wireless. i was actually it was just some comcast-based idiocy,
but now that you mention it, it could be some weirdness with belkin. dunno.
that shit comes, lasts a few days then goes. did you recently install
spybot on one of your windoz comps? i did, then when i uninstalled it, the
ubuntu laptop was working again too, although it did the nonconnection thing
once or twice after. thought it might have been that.
it's done this before, but it seems to only last a few days at a time.
