tomcat5.5 error on attempt to install packages

On attempting to install package updates via Add/Remove Applications, I get
the following error message:

E: tomcat5.5: subprocess post-installation script returned error exit status
1

How do I proceed?

Thanks, but I'm not yet at home enough on linux to go delving into files. Is
there some other "user friendly" way of installing a package? Perhaps
installing something other than Synaptic?

Or is there a hand-holding tutorial for installing from the command line in
Ubuntu?
