Resetting Passwords

how exactly does one prevent a password change without authorization
using the live cd? Other than physical security that is.

You prevent unauthorized people from gaining physical access to your computer.
There is no OS that can protect you completely. Once people come into physical
contact with your computer they can do just about anything, including wiping out
your files and re-installing what they want to. You can password protect your
BIOS and grub and prevent people from booting from external devices, but these
things also restrict you.
