Questions about Virtualbox

Date: Dec 06    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 410

I have it installed on both machines now. This one is using Vista
and there are no problems whatsoever.

On the PhenomII I have XP and it is working also except I cannot
use the printer. Its a USB printer that works perfectly on the dual
core, but when I switch it to the PhenomII it can see it and says
its going to print, but nothing happens. OK thats problem #1

I installed a second Vbox, this one with Win7- it loads and
programs work, but there is no sound. I have checked every possible
setting for sound and nothing works. It also doesn't recognize the
printer and it wont see the Flashcard, even tho it says its installed.

My question is, are these problems related to the particular OS's
or is it Vbox, or could it be some settings on the host machine, or
the bios possibly. I did go in and make sure that virtualization was
enabled. Is there more that needs to be done?

Is there something special needs to be set in order to have more than
one Vbox on a machine?

I don't really need two, but like to push all the options to the max
in order to get a feel for how it all works.

Win7 is relatively new and I haven't heard much about its use in Vbox.

If I was troubleshooting, I would check to see if the things you mentioned
work properly on the host machine first. For example if a flash drive has
not been mounted or the sound board has been muted in the host it would not
work in the guest either.

Next I would check the settings in Vbox under the VM you are working on to
make sure that you have made the devices available to the VM. Once it is
booted, I would check the status bar at the bottom right to make sure they
are checked and in use in the VM.

If everything checked okay then I would check the guest OS to see if the
drivers are installed properly. With XP, if you don't have the proper driver
the device manager in the control panel will show a question mark beside the
device. I am not sure how the control panel in Win7 works, not having used
it.

If the device is not available it would not show in the list at all and
there would not even be a device name. This would be a clue to go back to
the settings and make it available. If it was available then I would try a
different Vbox drive in the settings of Vbox for that VM. You need to
shutdown the Vm to do this.

It is important when trouble shooting to be systematic and eliminate the
most obvious ones first, only changing one thing. Write down things you've
tried if you can't remember them.

Lastly, I would check out forums where Vbox and Ubuntu are commonly used or
one that is more general such as Linuxquestions.org.

Of course you know I'd already checked out the most obvious before
asking the question.

OK one step at a time

All questions pertain to the PhenomII and that just may be where the
trouble lies to begin with.

Vbox #1 is working perfectly except the printer just doesn't work
properly- possibly drivers in the host OS will check that out
further, the dual core does have lots of drivers for the printer
that are not present in the phenomII All USB devices present and
accounted for and working except of course for the printer.

Vbox#2 is working sort of. It does connect to the Internet, but
there is no sound ! I get error messages about no device being
installed. Have tried all possible options changing one setting at a
time. None of them gives me sound, but the sound works perfectly on
Vbox#1 This alone makes it virtually unuseable. All USB devices
are visable but none are useable ?? even tho the boxes are checked
and enabled.

Yes, everything works properly on the host machine with possible
exception of printer- It works but not quite the way I expect it
to. First stop is get those drivers.

Which VirtualBox are you using?
PUEL or OSE?

Answer #4    Answered On: Dec 06

PUEL 3. something, its the latest version

Knowing how difficult it is to FIX something once Ive messed it up
completely decided to do myself a favor and deleted both Vboxes
along with associated Vdrives and started over
Again Win7 and again no sound, so perused some forums and found
I wasn't the only one having problems, Win7 apparently can't seem to
find the drivers for AC97 so I went looking downloaded and installed
manually and its working.
Now to play with Win7 and see how it behaves with the rest of my stuff.
