Problems with Jack

I decided to try recording music again (the last 2-3 times I
stopped because I could not get Jack running and the same has come up
again).

Here is what Jack says when I try to start it up:

JACK tmpdir identified as [/dev/shm]
23:54:10.790 MIDI connection graph change.
can't create mcop directory
Link points to "/tmp/ksocket-mikko"
23:54:11.307 Startup script terminated with exit status=256.
23:54:11.307 JACK is starting...
23:54:11.307 /usr/bin/jackd -R -dalsa -dhw:0 -r44100 -p128 -n2 -m
23:54:11.309 JACK was started with PID=5917 (0x171d).

Any help to get me going in the right direction would be appreciated, thanks

Yea, Ubie studio and jack is bad. Jack runs fine if you DO NOT install Ubie
studio. I'll check some thing els and get back to you.

Can you clarify something? Are you meaning installing Ubuntu Studio
after you've installed Ubuntu or doing a fresh Ubuntu Studio install.
I have a fresh Studio install and I've not messed with Jack yet.

Well, this has all unfolded over the past 8 or 9 months now, but I started
off with a 64bit version of Edgy. I upgraded that to a 64bit version of
Feisty and all hell broke loose. Then I asked around in here what to do and
was suggested to try the 32bit version. Well, being I did not want to lose
all of my data I installed the 32bit version of Feisty on another hard
drive. Then I tinkered around with Ubuntu Studio which changed my desktop
appearance a little bit (to something cooler, IMO). Anyways, I upgraded
Feisty to Gutsy (removing all repositories as suggested by Gobby), and that
is where I am now. I might add that when I upgraded my default background
became this orange/brown-colored inverted Nike swoosh type photo (which I
assume is standard Gutsy). After reinstating my repositories (and upgrading
them from Feisty to Gutsy in the text and link portions) all but 1 of them
worked (and I forget which one that is at the moment). Anywhoo, on all
setups that I attempted to use Jack (which was just about all of them) I had
no luck with it.

Hardware Specs (in case they help you help me here) include:
XION II case
160 GB 5400RPM ATA HD << the one with the 64bit on it
80 GB 7200 RPM ATA HD << the one with the 32bit on it
Floppy 1.44"
2 DVD+/-RW burners....1 ATA, 1 SATA
Gigabyte GA-939-** series (socket 939) (** fills in the 2 characters I am
forgetting at the moment)
[has Dual BIOS, 1AGP8X slot, 5 PCI slots, 4 RAM slots, 10/100/1000 LAN]
AMD Athlon64 4000+ CPU
2 GB DDR (2x1GB) Dual mode Ram
450Watt Power Supply
nVidia Corporation NV18 [GeForce4 MX 4000] 8X AGP card (it's either 128MB or
256MB)
Integrated sound card
Integrated LAN

I was browsing more on google and one of the links that came up was:
ubuntuforums.org/archive/index.php/t-488623.html

Would you suggest trying something like this? (Do you suppose this might
solve our current road block?)

I tried that too, but ran around in circles. You may want to check jackd
settings. Check if it is selected for driver ALSA and change it to OSS. Some
times that works. It does not harm your system to install the realtime kernel,
but as I said I hosed down Ubie studio and just ran Ubie instead. I installed
all the music programs myself and they all work fine with jackd. All Ubie studio
is a gloryfied version of Ubie and installs all the music programs for you. I
felt it pretty much sucks, but that is me.

Now that I have Jack up and running, I get to experiment with how to get
stuff like Audacity and Ardour and other stuff like that to 'play nice' with
it. Any good tutorials on that (or some general guidelines if that would
get me off the ground faster)?
