First things first - have you powered off the printer and re-booted
Ubuntu ? Fixes a myriad of computer problems

Next, reading up on this I found one user had to go through 'Print
Preview' to get PDF's printing so worth a shot if the above doesn't
work.

Just an observation from the log file - MediaType=None - did you
forget to tell the printer what it was printing on ?

Rebooted and did Print Preview.
It says its sending to the printer, the printer says "Processing....."
but after 30 min.. nothing is happened. But, I can click print on
a text file or odf and it prints immediately.

I only have one printer so that is the only one for it to go to.

Try going to http://localhost:631/ ( CUPS printing backend page ) and
check all jobs for the printer. You may have some pending ones that
are stopping the PDF print from being processed. Might be worth
looking at the error log in there too if it shows anything, mine
appears to be blank but then again I haven't had any errors

Is it just one particular PDF that won't print - i.e. will other PDF's
print successfully ? It's possible for a PDF to be protected against
printing and that flag may be set.

I think I saw something about an HP printer in your postings. Here is
what I found out recently about some HP printers (mine is a LaserJet
1018 - old but good).

I had been using a Windows as the print server but finally eliminated
that in favour of Kubuntu 10.10. While the Linux printers had no
problem printing from the HP as long as it was on the Windows machine
there was no response when hosted on Linux. I couldn't even print on
the machine where the printer was attached, even though it was
detected by the operating system. I searched and finally found that an
additional HP proprietary driver, hplip, was necessary. I found it on
their website and wasn't hard to install. That could be what you need.
There seems to be the same thing in the repositories but if that
doesn't work try the HP site.

no unfinished jobs and, interestingly, doesnt show my pdf's not
having
been completed. Error log shows what Ive already posted here. And it is
all pdfs.

Leslie, the hplip looks to be installed by default here.

When I print a normal page it goes right through but when I try to print
a pdf I see this error:

D [15/Oct/2011:10:38:14 -0500] [Job 12] Set job-printer-state-message
to "Unable to write print data: Broken pipe", current level=ERROR
D [15/Oct/2011:10:38:14 -0500] [Job 12] Print file sent, waiting for

WS> When I print a normal page it goes right through but when I try to
WS> print a pdf I see this error:

Googled a bit on that error and the page below might help ...
http://p-s.co.nz/wordpress/?p=227

Appears to be a size issue so if the PDF's have many pages try
printing a section at a time and see if they get through. Strange one
and apparently affects HP's on MAC too !!

Answer #9    Answered On: Feb 06

There was a issue setting that up - stalled twice for some reason -
but it is printing pdfs.. now.. lets see if it will print MY pdfs :D

Answer #10    Answered On: Feb 06

Well, my problem isnt solved yet.
When I print any pdf over 50kb in size I get this:

canceled at
Sun 16 Oct 2011 08:50:32 AM CDT
"Remote host did not respond with command status byte after 300 seconds!"

Ram Disk Size: 64400k
PLC Memory = 500k
PS Memory = 400k

Ive not messed with these but I know I can adjust the PLC and PS numbers.

Answer #11    Answered On: Feb 06

Definitely a size issue but the system should be able to cope with
files over 50Kb !! Maybe it's time to think about removing printer as
well as HPLIP and starting from scratch ? Also, as this is a network
printer do you have other network users who can access it and print ?

Answer #12    Answered On: Feb 06

Actually - this is starting from scratch.
My hd crashed and this is a brand new install of 10.04.
I didnt install hplip so it must be in the default install.

I have a hp jetdirect card and its connected to my modem.
The other two computers (windows XP) can print to it fine.

Answer #13    Answered On: Feb 06

Try the setup as described on the page below - it should help and
there are ways of reporting install errors too.

Answer #14    Answered On: Feb 06

I dont have a all in one but, I did test out several different drivers until I
found one that worked. I changed to

Driver:HP LaserJet 4050 - CUPS+Gutenprint v5.2.5 Simplified
(grayscale, 2-sided printing)

and it prints instantly now.

Answer #15    Answered On: Feb 06

Great stuff - was a driver issue all along and you sorted it :-) Worth
bearing in mind that the correct driver isn't always detected and if
there are printing issues then changing the driver is one fix to try.

Answer #16    Answered On: Feb 06

Well, the odd thing (I think) is the recommend driver is the driver I used
up until now. I went back and found it in my original posts to the ubuntu
list in 2007. Ive just stuck with it until now. Well, unless something
happened and I didnt catch it - which could very well be.
