Have XP SP2 ; do I have to add a partition for Ubuntu

- header says it all;

- what if I just install Ubuntu; will it not work or fry Windows during
the install or what ?

Have a 5 year old copy of Partition Magic,
which suggest a floppy recovery disk ( No floppy drive here )

Currently running a Dell with a NTFS 160 GB Hard drive

If you just install Ubuntu - that is what you will have - Ubuntu. If you
want a duel boot - go through the install process and create a second
partition.

If you let it do the auto partition it will put the grub boot loader in
and duel boot automaticcaly.

Not necessary. Just run the CD and it will partition to your choice or
automatically make room for Windows and use the remainder for linux
Partitions.

Run the Linux install and you will be given the option to save your XP
and use part of the free NTFS space to have GParted partition your
Linux Ext3 and Swap partitions.

Do a Windows Defrag before installing Linux, to allow maximum free
NTFS space. Then you can give a major portion of the free space to
Linux file system.

Throw away your old partitioning software. You'll be using GParted in
Linux for all your further partitioning or resizing of all file types.
It will even make FAT16 or 32.
