AWN - search for avant-window-navigator in Synaptic.

but I did not have a really good experience with AWN.

I personally installed it for a bit.....but it was really slow and it only works
in compiz mode, which meant that I can not rename my workspace, which is very
crucial for me.

It will work without Compiz, if you use Metacity and GNOME's built in
compositor.

There are many OS/Themes from Gnome-look.org. You install an OS/X theme and
an OS/X dock at the bottom. THere are several good panels such as Cairo-dock
which does not require Compiz or similar compositor and AWN or Avant Window
Navigator which does require compositing.
