notepad, wordpad or else?

I have been use notepad to create a java program. I want to know if any
of you to use a different one to make a java file. The reason I am
asking is the program is getting bigger and I would like to see the
number of lines on the left side. So when there is error and it tell
which line is errors. Also save file on extension as java instead of
filename.java.txt. I hate to rename from filename.java.txt to
filename.java when I use save or save-as. I wish there is a better one.
Does anyone know if there is a better one? I used to have Jbuilder for
window but it is very old and got it free. I was wondering if there is
another program that we can run java on window and dos? I hate to use
dos mode. Is there a shareware?

There are lots of free  IDE out there. You could use something lite
like JEdit or TextPad. There are even ones that are free with lots of
wizards for gui development, webservices, etc... like sun one studio
(community edition) or even netbeans. I'm sure there are plenty
others but these are pretty popular and free.

NetBeans: http://www.netbeans.org/

For just an editor, Crimson Editor is awesome! And it is free. See
http://www.crimsoneditor.com/ . Or, if you want something more,
NetBeans is pretty good and it is free. http://www.netbeans.org

I really like Eclipse, you can get it at www.eclipse.org. The price
is right (free) and it has lots of useful features. Windows/Unix/etc

There's a review in one of the latest Linux mags.
