Linux tools for Youtube

Date: Dec 04    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 435

Tools for viewing, downloading and converting flash videos from Youtube, etc. on
Linux. Links are provided for the individual applications. I have successfully
used some of them to convert a flv video to avi and then burn it to DVD in
Linux. I have used Windows in the past to do it, but found the Linux tools
actually worked better.

Is anybody familiar with this program and how to set it up?

It is good, but I find Downloadhelper, an add-on to firefox, easier to use
and it can download any flash video from anywhere.

I still use youtube-dl

For installing it,

sudo aptitude install youtube-dl

Then, for downloading a Youtube video, copy the URL of the video, then open a
Terminal window, give the command Youtube-dl and hit Space then paste the URL of
the video, then hit Enter. It will download the video in .flv format to your
Home foder. It is a nice, efficient program.

The youtube-dl app has been acting strange. Sometimes it works and sometimes
it doesn't. This morning I was able to download two files then nothing, same
thing a few days ago. when it fails i get the following message:

youtube-dl http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=10813m5GDz8
Retrieving video webpage... done.
Extracting URL "t" parameter... failed.
Error: unable to extract URL "t" parameter.
Try again several times. It may be a temporary problem.
Other typical problems:

* Video no longer exists.
* Video requires age confirmation but you did not provide an account.
* You provided the account data, but it is not valid.
* The connection was cut suddenly for some reason.
* YouTube changed their system, and the program no longer works.

Try to confirm you are able to view the video using a web browser.
Use the same video URL and account information, if needed, with this
program.
When using a proxy, make sure http_proxy has http://host:port format.
Try again several times and contact me if the problem persists.

Has anybody else with this app had the same problem?
