Linux soon to appear on more computers than Windows

Linux is soon to appear on more computers than Windows, as soon as next year
says blogger. His logic is that Linux will be embedded in all motherboards as
the move to instant on computers continues. Windows is too bloated to do this,
but Linux does it nicely due to its modular structure. However, perhaps M$ can
respond with a stripped down version of their OS. We'll have to wait and see,
but it is an interesting twist on what is happening. If it comes true will it
change people's perceptions toward Linux as a serious contended or will it
merely confirm it that Linux is not a serious OS, but one made to do small
tasks? The higher profile can't be bad, but will it encourage people to try the
full experience.

Very interesting! Could this be the beginning of the end of "feature bloat"?
It has been the way MS (and others) have sold their "new, bigger and better"
upgraded software. They have successfully convinced people that they should
buy something 99% of whose features they will never need, use or understand
instead of last year's product - which had only 95% of capabilities that
were beyond requirements for almost everyone.

The article's title, "Linux to Ship on More Desktops than Windows", is a
bit misleading since the body of the article concerns only laptops and
similar portable devices.

I like Phoenix's idea of allowing users to switch back
and forth between MS and Linux - Such non-threatening
exposure to the pleasures of Tux could see hordes of
MS drones changing over for good!

But Phoenix's plot to charge fees for the option
is reprehensible avarice. The FOSS community needs
to find ways to let people do it for free.
