Laptop problem

Date: Dec 12    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 386

I am relatively new to laptops. When I type on my eeePC and I pause the cursor
jumps to where the mouse is hovering and I end up typing the next bit in the
wrong place. Not being a touch typist I might have typed half a line before I
look, only to find a mess.

Does this happen on all laptops?
Is there a fix that does not involve my learning to touch type?
If it is the touchpad at fault, can I toggle it off and on?

I suspect one of your thumbs is sagging and touching the pad which is causing
the cursor to jump. I've learned to keep things stiff to avoid the issue.
Well, my thumbs, that is.

If you've got an alternate mousing device then you should be able to disable the
touchpad. Not sure where that'd be in Ubuntu, tho.

You don't need to disable the touchpad, you only need to disable
"taps". There is an option to do it in 8.04, but I'm not at the linux
box now so I can't give you specifics. Suggest you start looking
under SYSTEM > PREFERENCES.

I've had my eeepc for about 14 months and noticed the same problem.

The same thing also happens to me on my MSI Wind when my thumb strays onto
the touchpad. Fortunately on the Wind there is a Function key that toggles
the touchpad off and on. If there isn't a utility to do the same on the
eeepc someone should write it!

Otherwise one might be able to train the thumbs not to fall on the touchpad
area, but that would not be easy.

It happens on my laptop named Medion running Windows vista also. I think
it has to do with some key or keys on the right side and if I hold my
fingers like playing a piano in the curled form it doesn't do it as much.

In Windows, Control Panel there is a program that controls the mouse &
pointer (speed, sensitivity, etc.). Perhaps you can find a similar
control for the Touch Pad? You may have to dig for it and I do not
know if such a control exists under Linux.

I found a programme called Touch Freeze that seems to work. It stops the cursor
from jumping around when you are typing. I got it from appnr.com. I also found
that there is a Windows version. It is from Google.

I think that my Touchpad is extraordinarily sensitive.

Yes, but it happens in KDE or GNOME equally, so it must be something else.
It happens in Windows which came with it, but not nearly as much. ASUS included
a tray utility with Windows and that seems to be the difference between what is
happening in there and in Linux.

It probably has to do with sensitivity control, but I am not sure where to look.
Could it be as simple as editing gconf?

For now the problem is dealt with, but it would be good to know for future
reference.

Worked for me using the gnome desktop.
system>preferences>mouse. folder tab at top of window click on
touchpad and uncheck allow mouse click using pad, and you will be set.
I have learned how to keep my thumb off the pad but not without a
tired hurting thumb after a long session.
