keyboard macro program

Date: Nov 30    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 1829

I'm not clear whether it
ever got to list. Please forgive this second request.

I'd love to find some keyboard macro program that will enable me to type
a few letters, and have those characters replaced by other characters.
For example, in Windows, I'm able to set it up, using a macro program,
to replace the letters dt with the current date. And I can replace my
initials, jpn, with my full name and address.

Is there something like this for Ubuntu Linux?

Autohotkey will work in Wine. Also there is Autokey:
http://code.google.com/p/autokey/

It is in Ubuntu's repositories.

Autokey has two versions -- GTK or QT. I have no idea which I should
try. Any guidance? I'm using Ubuntu Netbook Remix 10.04. Thanks
again.

Ubuntu/GNOME uses GTK and Kubuntu/KDE uses QT. You will likely prefer GTK,
although either will work in UNE.
