Graphics Card recomendation

Date: Feb 07    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 392

I want to start using Unity in all its 3D glory. In order to do so I need a
better graphics systems then the nvidia GeForce 6150 system I currently have.
The motherboard is a BioStar MCP6PB M2+ with an ADM Phenon II X4, 64-bit, 4GB
memory with a 420 watt power supply. I have one unused PCI-Express x16
full-height slot.

Currently I am using a VGA connection but my monitor also has a DVI input that I
would like to start using. I also want a HDMI output.

Any recommendations, what people are using and like. Some of what I have been
looking at on TigerDirect and NewEgg have feedback that says runs hot, Windows
drivers suck. Hopefully with some smart shopping I can keep the problems low and
manageable. So what are folks using as an add-on graphics card?

Want to take advantage of the end-of-year sales.

I am using an ATI and it works OTB without proprietary drivers using mesa
for 3D. It has an Radeon 5500 chipset. I have also had good luck with
Nvidia, but the Nouveau driver is not as useful so you need the proprietary
driver to get full desktop effects. I have an Intel chipset on my netook
and have had no problems and it has been in use since 9.04.

I am very happy with my Nvidia 9400GT. Its direct successor is the 210 series.
This card is inexpensive but well-rated:
PNY VCGGT5201XPB GeForce GT 520 (Fermi) 1GB 64-bit DDR3 PCI Express 2.0 x16 HDCP
Ready Low Profile Ready Video Card

I would go to PCMech.com before buying.

I'll be following the responses to this,as I'm in the same boat. The
Linux Hardware List is very much out of date WRT video cards.
