Desktop Icons (Karmic)

Here's an interesting one for everyone - how do I get rid of all desktop icons?

Every time I plug in an external drive, or flash drive to the usb
ports, I get the thing appearing on the desktop - this is not
acceptable!

There must be a way of disabling this - I mean, even Windows can do this ...

Please don't make me dump Linux, and sell my soul to the devil ...

If having an icon on your desktop causes you to threaten to jump -- you
need to go ahead and do it.

Here is something I found how to do on the web

u-desktop/

If you cant read it here is the way

Press Alt+F2
Type in gconf-editor and hit run

Now browser too
apps \ nautilus \ desktop

You should see a key in the right-hand pane called volumes_visible. Remove the
checkbox from it, and the icons will instantly disappear from the desktop.
Remember that you can always access the drives from the "Computer" icon, or
easily in the file browser.

I'm not denying that it's important to you, but - what's the problem? Is it
simply aesthetics?
