Canon LBP 3100

Date: Jan 21    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 599

Has anyone been able to make a Canon LBP 3100 printer work with ANY Linux
distro? I have the Canon drivers and have tried several different install
methods found on the internet, but the printer just sits there like a large
paperweight. It works perfectly in Windows. So far my efforts have been in Ubuntu
10.04 and Mint, but I'll be trying Fedora today.

Please don't waste your time and mine by linking to instructions on the web
unless you have personally followed those instructions and achieved a working
printer. I know how to use search engines.

You need to go to the Canon web site and the support section to get a
driver for your model for Linux

I don't have that printer and am just flying blind here... there are
Kubuntu drivers for lots of other Canon LBP models in the Add printers
utility. Have you tried one just before or after your model number to
see if it will work? Other than that, and since you are presumably
using the same able with Windows, I can't think of anything else to
try.

There is a paid version of Gutenprint (sp?) that might work, but it's about $50.

I've never installed an LBP 3100, but I have had 100% success with a very
different approach. I turn on the printer, run Administration/Printing, and
select "add." Then highlight how the printer is attached, wait a few seconds and
select the printer. I have a "supported printer," and this has never failed.

I had a Canon 5200 (I hope I remember the number right) and no matter what
I did I could not find a driver - all I could find is "not supported under
Linux". Fortunately the printer gave up before me and so I went and bought
an HP CP1025 instead and that works with no problems.

So I am afraid that your answer may well be that your LBP 3100 will never
work. Canon is not very sympathetic towards Linux (and, in my case, the
feeling is reciprocated).

Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this. The weird thing is that Canon
has Linux drivers that are supposed to work with this printer on their website.
None of the instructions I've found on the net work. The good news is that it is
not my printer, but belongs to a friend who ignored my advice to never buy
peripherals without consulting with me first, and chose to believe the salesman.

HP printers are usually a slam-dunk install, but I've found Canons to be very
iffy. Some work, some don't.

Anyway, I've thrown in the towel. I've already wasted way too much time on this
printer.

Did you have a look at the CUPS driver for this printer ?

Is it possible to install the Windows drivers in wine ?

Answer #8    Answered On: Jan 21

No, because Windows has a registry and Linux does not, so even if they did
work in Wine they would have no effect.
