Thanks to everyone who tried to help with this. The weird thing is that Canon
has Linux drivers that are supposed to work with this printer on their website.
None of the instructions I've found on the net work. The good news is that it is
not my printer, but belongs to a friend who ignored my advice to never buy
peripherals without consulting with me first, and chose to believe the salesman.
HP printers are usually a slam-dunk install, but I've found Canons to be very
iffy. Some work, some don't.
Anyway, I've thrown in the towel. I've already wasted way too much time on this
printer.
