How to adjust shutdown timer in Ubuntu 9.10

I wish to change the time delay on shut down. I have googled "shutdown timer in
ubuntu 9.10" and it says to right click on the power button and chose
preferences. That "preferences" does not show up in 9.10 when you click the
power button. Can anyone enlighten please on how to adjust the shutdown timer
please
