Wherever possible it is best to use the repositories because what can be easily
installed can be easily removed. HPLIP is in the repos. Many drivers are
included with the kernel, but if you install Gutenprint and Foomatic, along with
CUPS you get most of them. Some are also found in the miscellaneous text based
sections. For example, my Brother laser printers are there. It is rare to have
to go outside to get them with any distribution and especially with Ubuntu which
has such large repositories.
Always check out the repositories and search there before going to an outside
source. It is the Linux way. Searching the net is the Windows way.
