Strange happenings with Ubuntu 10.04.2

Date: Jan 29    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 510

I have just bought a desktop PC that came loaded with Ubuntu 10.04.2
I'm using dialup.
Yes I'm a dinosaur and I'm also not NEARLY so clever with computers as you guys
so please be gentle with this computer moron.
First issue.
When I boot up 10.04 and connect to the internet I click Firefox and it always
starts up in OFFLINE mode, I have to switch it to online mode to begin anything,
its annoying and I don't know how to get it to start up in online mode.
Second issue.
Say I have been surfing a while and walk away leaving web pages open.
If I return after about 30 minutes the system has logged me off and Firefox has
gone back to offline mode, all previously open web pages are lost.
Any clues?

Being logged off after a preset time when the connection is not being
actively used is a function of all dial-up accounts and whilst there
are artificial ways of keeping the connection open it's against the
T&C of any dial-up provider - it can lead to termination of the
service if you persists after being warned about it !

The reason is due to the way that dial-up works - inactive connections
prevent others from dialing in so they are terminated to give everyone
a fair share of the service. You might argue that there are fewer
users these days but the provider may not see it that way and might
well have enough users to make this still an issue for them. Also bear
in mind that dial-up equipment is old and getting to the stage where
repairs probably aren't viable, so it may well be that the ISP has
fewer workable connections too !!

As for Firefox - that again is likely due to the dial-up type of
connection and I don't think there's any way to override it. Basically
when Firefox starts up it doesn't *see* the internet connection
properly as it's too slow !

The advice would be to switch to broadband but that might not be
viable for you ( cost / location ) and if so then these annoyances of
dial-up will just be something that have to be borne. Many of us here
will shudder as they are reminded of their time on dial-up

I should have mentioned that my previous system (same ISP) ran Ubuntu 7.10 and
an earlier edition of Firefox and that I can leave my PC unattended for up to
four hours before the ISP cuts me off.
Under 7.10 If I left the box alone for long the operating system simply went
into screensaver or powered off the monitor. I never lost Firefox web pages nor
did Firefox ever go into offline mode.
Under 10.04 my internet connection is not severed if I leave it alone for say 40
minutes. The operating system logs me off I must sign in again and Firefox will
have gone into offline mode and lost whatever web pages I had open.

Perhaps Ubuntu is going into sleep mode after a preset time, you can
check this by going to [ System / Preferences / Power Management ].

To prohibit firefox from going into offline mode when loosing a
connection, go to "about:config" in the address bar and search for
"network.manage-offline-status" set that entry to false. If you don't
have that entry, right-click on the config page and select new ->
bolean. Give it the name in quotes above, click on, then set to
false. That should take care of the problem.

My power management was indeed set to go into sleep mode after 30 minutes.

The Firefox Add-On Session Manager can be configured to restart with opened
tabs.
