I've managed to send from my nokia to Ubuntu via Bluetooth. That was
about as good as I ever did on XP, too though. Once or twice I had the
software working but then it stopped working again. I got the USB cable
and again it worked for a while then stopped. I always had to bluetooth
files across one by one.

I've got xGNokii installed on Ubuntu but I don't remember having to
unzip anything - I'm not usually very good with Ubuntu programs that
have to be unzipped, I usually stick to packages. Have you tried looking
for Nokia programs in Synaptic? xGNokii
