Sounds like a hardware issue. Does the BIOS show it when you start
your computer? If you dual boot does the optical drive show up in the
other operating system(s)?? Have you tried running a (different) live
distro to see if it recognizes it? Are the jumpers set correctly?
Cables all firmly attached?
