Windows 2000 does not wipe out GRUB

Date: Dec 06    Category: Unix / Linux / Ubuntu    Views: 522

I had the time and nerve to re-do this experiment. I did it on my older hard
disk as well as in a virtual machine in Virtualbox.
I set upa Windows 2000/Ubuntu Hardy Heron dual boot and reinstalled Windows
2000. The surprise was the dual boot persisted OK, Windows as well as Ubuntu
could be loaded with no problems. I reinstalled Windows 2000 again and the
result was the same. The dual boot scheme remained intact, GRUB did not have to
be reinstalled.

Do you have separate drives?..................

The dual boot scheme with Windows 2000 and Ubuntu was tested on my IDE drive.

Yes, I use my older IDE drive for experiments and my new SATA drive for 2
distros in dual boot: Ubuntu 8.04 and OpenGEU with which I had troubles because
Enlightenment is rather troublesome, so I installed other desktop environments
and window managers. I use XFCE mostly.
When I want to install something on my IDE drive I disconnect my SATA drive.

If you have windows already set up on your computer, re-installing it
would not wipe out Ubuntu. One can even install a different windows on
the same partiton. It has already been recognized by grub. What one
cannot do is install a fresh windows after installing Ubuntu as windows
will the overwrite Ubuntu.

This is the point. After reinstalling Windows XP one has to reinstall GRUB so
that both Ubuntu and Windows can be booted. In the case of reinstalling Windows
2000 this does not happen, both can be booted. I will retry this with Windows 7.
