Can one use True Type Fonts in Linux? If so, do they need to be converted? How
is this done? How would one install them so they are available to all programs
that use fonts such as GUI apps (Open Office, etc.)

I just put them in the .fonts folder under /home.

You have to log out and log back in to see them available though.

If you have a windows install that is mounted in linux I just sym-link
the windows fonts directory to the global fonts in linux.
